Affordable ways to maintain your granite countertops

Granite countertops are loved by millions of people and they are a popular option for the home, especially in the kitchen. Granite is extremely durable, very beautiful and a breeze to maintain and clean. You naturally want your granite countertops to remain in prime condition for as long as possible and there are several affordable ways to ensure they stay looking new:

  • Daily maintenance – We recommend wiping down your granite countertops at least once a day with warm water, a non-abrasive cleanser and a soft cloth. Ideally you should wipe your countertops down after every use. If you spill something on the granite, wipe it off immediately rather than letting it sit.
  • Heavy duty cleaning – If your granite countertops need deep cleaning, a heavy duty stone cleaner and degreaser will effectively remove grime, grease and dirt. Stone cleaners are designed to deep clean without damaging your granite, but be sure to carefully follow the instructions.
  • Removing stains – For stubborn stains on your granite countertop, there is a non-acid absorptive clay cleaning powder called stone poultice which can remove deep-set grease, oil and other stains. Sometimes poultice can dull the shine of granite, so marble polish will be required to restore the original shine.
  • Sealing the granite – Traditionally, homeowners have been told to seal their granite annually, but with the advancements that have been made in sealing products, some sealers can last three to five years. After you have thoroughly cleaned your granite countertops and allowed the stone to dry for several hours, pour the sealer on the surface and use a foam brush to spread it. After ten minutes, blot any remaining sealer and use a clean terry cloth to buff the stone dry.
